Disturbing, to say the least.
Disturbing, to say the least. It would be naive to think some problems wouldn't happen, especially with the quantity and time constrictions on the migration of children, but the government has to act within the scope of the law. If a relative or family friend steps forward it's much easier to place a child than to wait for some altruistic non-related family to become available. That some people lied or weren't investigated as safe is tragic.
This article doesn't really get into the follow-up of the situation and that bothers me even more. So, the government has identified children who have gone into less than desirable situations. Now what? Where's the recourse? Are the social workers hands truly tied or must the children continue living in abject slavery because of the rules. What penalties or charges might the farms face for using migrant children as cheap slave labor? And the man who "married" his underage foster child? Are there charges pending for him?
It just seems that the article seems more intent on placing blame than explaining the issue.
