I recently installed Windows 7 on two machines.  136 updates....

It took hours.

Yep. I'm with you Emily Evans.  Plus, when I sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade, it doesn't take 3 hours.

I switched off the updates and the system runs much faster than ever.  I just install whatever is necessary. 2 years done in this way, no viruses, no hassles.

Once I had a presentation to do and this happened. I lucked out and managed to borrow another laptop, grab my slides from dropbox, and go... The updates went on for over 40 minutes so I would have been screwed.
