I don't think it's doomed at all. The show is more than one man. It's writers, researchers, producers and a other talent that all comes together with a figurehead/face. Currently that face is John Stewart. It wasn't always and it wasn't always intended to be. 

I think Trevor Noah is a good find as a replacement, especially since John Oliver and Stephen Colbert are already on to their own projects. He's much funnier than Larry Wilmore (whose show is terrible, in my opinion). Jason Jones might have pulled it off, but apparently he's off to something else.
