This is a travesty on every level. Having been assigned to a UN peacekeeping mission I'd like to believe that, had an act like this been reported, we would have mobilized with extreme prejudice.

And what's with the hour long gap in communication? Did someone in the South Sudanese government call in an illicit favor or threat on a commanding officer demanding the UN troops stand down?

If you were allowed to. This is by no means the first time this has happened, and in others, UN troops have stood by during mass murders because they were outgunned or hadn't actually been issued live ammunition for fear they'd use it.

That's true, John Bump​. I remember being in Bosnia and most of us weren't issued rounds for fear we'd use them. Only guard posts had them and even they were accounted for at every shift.
