I vote for a man stung by reality into a position of greater compassion.  This is a journey many of us take and its counter productive to not embrace positive change.   I say good for you Sen. Portman.  You are a example for your party.

At some point you have to allow these people to change their minds. That does not mean you absolve them of responsibility. If anything this new view should invigorate them to make amends for past mistakes.
Now, this is just one issues, that required personal involvement  This was not just him sitting around figuring it out. So there is that. I just hope that he does not need to drive a family member into poverty to learn about economics.

I am glad to see such people change their mind, and leave their 19th century views behind. However, I'll always be sceptical of their motives and motivations.
