No. Airplanes have been sardine cans for decades.

(I'm thinking of a McDonnell-Douglas MD-80, where an additional line of seats was added, making it two-and-three seats across. During a flight to St. Louis in the late 90's, the row in front of us had three linebacker-sized gentlemen who spent the entire flight hunched over with their shoulders crunched in so they could fit.)
