1933 (in ascorbic acid), from a- (2) + scorb(ut)ic"of scurvy" (from Medieval Latin scorbuticus"scurvy"); originally in reference to Vitamin C,which is an anti-scorbutic. The Latin word isperhaps of German or Dutch origin.
