It certainly doesn't look like any bicycle that would have been available in 1914 or 1916 for that matter.

I don't see anything on snopes.com but I would think this is urban myth material.

It was possible for someone to feel the need to fight for one side or another because of familial obligations and therefore leave earlier than the US's involvement.

I have seen similar things. I once saw a wire fence that had grown into a tree. :)

My grandpa had things in his trees that had been grown around. Sometimes you didn't know they wee there until you had to cut into them.... kind of hard on the saw!!

Directions: The bike tree is off of Vashon Highway (which runs between the Seattle and Tacoma ferry ports on either end of the island) on the northeast corner of the Vashon Highway and SW 204 St. intersection, about 50-60 ft (very rough guesstimate) into the woods on the north side of Sound Food Cafe.
