So, I have a netbook that's still running WinXP, but it's getting a little sluggish.
So, I have a netbook that's still running WinXP, but it's getting a little sluggish. Been thinking about tossing Linux on there to get some more life out of it. I've used Ubuntu before and like it's ease-of-use since I'm not really a programmer. Is there a better distro, though?
Asus eePC. I think it has a 1gig single-core processor but I can't think of the other specs off hand.

In any case, download and burn a couple live CD's and try them out.
If it's really old you may do better with a distro that's optimized for speed over fancy; there are slackware, gentoo, and arch distros that do this.
John Bump is completely correct. Unity in ubuntu is atrocious, which is why Mint is the #1 distro currently.
That being said i'll only use Arch Linux (official)
all those reasons you mention is why i'd never run windows on my machines. haha
