Rugger Ducky, you are a female veteran and therefore had a different perspective than I did being in. Would you say this is fairly widespread?

Don't even ask why guys don't report their rapes. Which are way more frequent than you might think. Especially gang rapes of a perceived "fuck up" amongst combat troops.
Could have prevented a number of deaths right there with a safe reporting system.

Jamie, that's the reason such a large portion of rapes went unreported. Because women have known for decades that the male perception of women in the Army is "dyke or slut"
And yes, this happened a LOT more under DADT. A military obsessed with sexual orientation is not going to worry about sexual assault.
I personally knew a 2LT that was raped by our XO after being at my last duty station for a week. She reported it to the MPs, there was no rape kit done, and the report was tossed by the BDE commander, because he said the XO was a good guy who just made a mistake and shouldn't lose his long career. Besides, he had a family to support.
Meanwhile she is ostracized, humiliated, and eventually the accusations of dyke start up. Only she was straight. Didn't matter though, CID got all the "confession" they needed after six hours of nonstop grilling her. She had once attended a Pride Parade (with her cousin, who was just out of the closet.)
She had the choice of taking a court martial for conduct unbecoming, or resigning. She took the latter.
