I believe something's going on. In 1994 I went on a trip with my girlfriend(now wife) and 3 of our friends through Iowa on highway 61 toward Minneapolis when we stop to refuel because it was time. I have to stop for a moment and explain that the gas gauge was broken and we had to refill every 300 miles and we did this religiously or else we were gonna be stuck. So we stop just past Quad City and ask how far we are from Minneapolis and we're MUCH further behind than we thought and then the owner of the car points out that we just went 300 miles but the tank was only 1/2 empty; both facts 100% verifiable. The loss of time can be explained away but there is absolutely nothing that can explain how the gas economy suddenly doubled that doesn't involve outside forces of some sort.
