The Jason Scale - A Category of Layers of Religious Belief

Image
Apparently there's a Richard Dawkins Religious Belief Scale. I'd never seen this scale before, but to be fair, I've never read Richard Dawkins' books. You see, I don't need someone else to explain to my why I'm an atheist - I already know. It's because I know there are no such things as gods. Per his scale, that would make me a Strong Atheist. Per my scale, that would make me a Gnostic Atheist. Stolen from someone on Google+ But, being who I am, I found fault with the Dawkins'   scale. So, I made my own. I'm going to call it The Jason Scale because, why not. I placed Fundamentalist with "Strong Theist" due to the single fact that anyone who considers themselves a strong believer in their god/s is probably also a strict adherent to the belief system set up by their religion. I added Gnostic, a word from ancient Greek meaning to know  as another position on the scale. gnostic "relating to knowledge," 1650s,...

Atheists Can be as Dumb as Everyone Else

The truth of the matter is, atheism isn't anything more than being an atheist, and an atheist isn't anything more than someone who does not believe in any sort of gods . It really is that simple. Yet somehow, somewhere along the way, people began trying to attach more significance to atheism. Not only are we supposed to be not believe in any sort of god/s, but we're supposed to be anti-religion, hyper-scientific, super-intellectual and even dismissive of all other forms of the supernatural that have nothing to do with gods. I've noticed a growing trend on social networks to mock religions with invalid and fallacious arguments. For example, the post linked to above: Day 1: God created light Day 4: God created the Sun If you click through to this post you'll see I'm getting a lot of flack for tearing this argument apart. The premise of the anti-religious statement is that it's illogical that an all-knowing all-powerful god would create light be...

Coming Out

Image
No, it's not what you think. Yes, the term "coming out" usually means "out of the closet" but in this case the closet isn't a gay one, it's a religious one. Or rather, it's an atheistic one. That's right, I'm an atheist. Someone on Google+ posted a question this morning about "coming out" and do we have any interesting stories to tell regarding coming out to our families or friends. I don't. Somewhen along the time I was 12 or 13 I reasoned (the Christian's) god couldn't exist. It's really not that hard to do once you start thinking about it. I didn't need Dawkins, Darwin or Carl Sagan to help me figure it out -- it was simply a conclusion I came to on my own. I remember the first time I said it out loud in front of a parent. I was 17 and signing up for the Army, the recruiter sitting at my mom's dining room table asked a succession of questions and finally came to religion. I answered atheist. My m...

All Praise Be to Allah!

Did you know, the claim of "my religion made me do it" is now an acceptable defense in the United States of America? Or, at least in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania? That's right: you can now assault people on the street as long as you claim it's your religious right. I mean, the First Amendment does  protect your rights to religious freedom, does it not ? Read About It Here It seems as though, Magistrate Mark W. Martin, of Mechanicsburg, PA has decided that not only is ignorance of the law an excuse under the law, but offensive Hallowe'en costumes are assault worthy and Free Speech is trumped by those who claim the rights of religious freedom. Why? Because a man, an atheist, wore a zombie Muhammod costume during a Hallowe'en parade and a Muslim man assaulted him for breaking Islamic law. Um, where is the law of the United States, here? Heck, even the law of Pennsylvania? I'm sure there's a provision against assault somewhere. However, i...

Dear Pastor Bryan,

So, I read an article on FreeThoughtsBlog and there was link to Pastor Bryan's church website to leave him a comment. I'm assuming this comment system is for his parishioners and not the rest of us, but seeing as I had a couple of minutes I went ahead and sent this message to him: Pastor Bryan,  You, sir, are a moron. I read your comments about atheists being evil and have no life purpose other than to disparage your belief system.  You're wrong.  Atheists live perfectly normal lives. They go to school, do your taxes, make your coffee, and fix your home when it breaks. They raise families, vote and, yes, spend time in foxholes.  Speaking of which, I am a veteran. I gave up my rights to free speech to protect yours; I gave up my rights guaranteed to ever American regardless of race, creed, religion, gender or sex so you could keep yours; I gave up my rights to manage my own life so you could continue freely managing yours.  I'm also an atheist. I w...

Ten Signs You're an Unquestioning Christian

Ten Signs You Are An Unquestioning Christian 1: You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of YOUR god. 2: You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from lesser life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt. 3: You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem with believing in a Trinity god. 4: Your face turns purple when you hear of the atrocities attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all of the babies of Egypt in 'Exodus' and ordered the elimination of ENTIRE ETHNIC GROUPS in 'Joshua' - including women, children, and animals. 5: You laugh at Hindu beliefs that defy humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem in believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then g...
