No, leadership Isn't ...

Image
There is so much disinformation out there regarding what is and what is the role of leadership. This particular gem is another example of how people get it wrong.  Leadership isn't showing up. It's not being in charge. It's not putting our fires. Leadership isn't determined based upon what you do, but what and how you encourage others to be better than they were before you became involved.

Quote

" Most of our obstacles would melt away if, instead of cowering before them, we should make up our minds to walk boldly through them ." Orison Swett Marden

Quote -- leadership

"Come to the edge," he said. They said: "We are afraid." "Come to the edge," he said. They came. He pushed them, And they flew... - Guillaume Apollinaire

The Folly of Youth

"The young do not know enough to be prudent, and therefore they attempt the impossible -- and achieve it, generation after generation." ~ Pearl S. Buck ~ It's called progress. The youthful always challenge the status quo. It's inevitable that they do and it's inevitable that they eventually succeed.

Oppression

"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has but one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all it's citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear." ~ Harry S. Truman ~ Or, at least where the opposition voices live in fear of their government.

Saw this quote today and loved it, so I'm sharing: ‎"Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity."   - Horace Mann
"No one can whistle a symphony. It takes an orchestra to play it." ~ H.E. Luccock I sometimes forget that I can't do it all and to delegate certain tasks to other people.

If You Wish to Soar With Eagles, They Why Surround Yourself With Turkeys?

Something else to think about. If you wish to advance both personally and professionally you must accept greater challenges. "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow. " ~ Ronald E. Osborn

Fool me once...

"It is wise to remember that you are one of those who can be fooled some of the time." ~ Laurence J. Peter Something to remember in this modern age of "you can do no wrong" and "it's everyone else's fault." You are not perfect. You are not all knowing. You are fallible. Remember that when criticizing others.

We should never reach for mediocre

And "good enough" should never be satisfactory. "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo

Reading

Just started reading "The Leadership Secrets of Colin Powell" by Oren Harari. It's a few years old having been written during Powell's tenure as Secretary of State. But as a veteran, I'm curious as how his experiences transferred to the civilian world and where he had to adjust his beliefs.
