New Job - Old Pet Peeves

Image
It's been a couple of weeks since I posted a blog, um, post, but I've been busy. And when I haven't been busy, I've been tired. On May first I started a new job in, what I thought was supposed to be, sales. I interviewed for a sales job and expressed my sales background. Turns out, only about 30% of the position will be sales related; the rest will be project management and that's why my official title is Project Manager. This wouldn't be so hard except for the fact that this company keeps withholding information from me. Not trade secrets, mind you, but rather their sales process, details about what they sell and how they implement the entire process. I've had numerous talks with the senior leadership - that is, the company founder and owner, the construction manager and the sales manager - about this lack of training and how it's kept me from feeling comfortable talking about the products and services while in the field and aside from the construct...

The Money's Not Worth the Hassle

Well, that's annoying. Last week a friend of mine, who owns his own company, asked me if I could help him out with some work he had too much of at the moment. Since I'm (mostly) unemployed and hurting for money I decided to entertain the idea and we talked about what he needed help with, how much time commitment and compensation. He told me one of his customers is located in downtown Denver, needed servicing 3 days a week, about 2 hours a day, at any time of my choosing. He would pay me the equivalent of $25/hr. Okay, I was in. I only needed to go with him down to the customer, get the lay of the land talk to the client and make my final decision.  We had this conversation on a Tuesday afternoon. He, or his son, were supposed to call me on Wednesday when they were in the area so I could meet them at the customer's location and decide if I wanted to take the contract. Neither of them called. Finally with COB rapidly approaching I called him and reminded him this i...

Why Are IT Recruiters F'n Idiots?

Okay, this isn't me, this is an acquaintance of mine who posted this on a local forum that I belong to. But, it's funny and echoes so closely to home in a much better way than I ever could have written it out. The barriers to entry for the IT recruiting industry are so low to be almost nonexistent. While there may be some small percentage of IT recruiters who are capable in some way, my experience has been poor at best. I've had to deal with them on both sides of the fence. As both a job seeker and a hiring manager. I have been in IT since the early 90s with steady progression up the food chain to even holding a Chief Technology officer position. So I know how the hiring process works. I studied advance engineering in collage and have a few software patents to my credit so I am not an idiot by "most standards".  I left the IT industry 2 years ago for a startup in a different industry. That didn't work out so now I am getting back in. Seems nothing has cha...
