Mo' Neighbors, Mo' Problems.

Last Sunday at 4AM I was woken from a very deep sleep by screaming and shouting from somewhere outside my bedroom window, as recounted HERE . I listened to it for about 10 minutes thinking it would quiet down - that the people would get it out of their system and go inside or leave, or whatever. It didn't quiet down. From what I heard it sounded like a woman was venting, or perhaps screaming at a man, and someone else was consoling her, with statements like: "He's an asshole," "He's a fucking cunt," and "You don't have to take that from him," and "No you're a bitch." Granted those aren't direct quotes, but something along those lines, the last one sounding like it came from a man's voice, hence the assumption that someone was fighting with their significant other. Since it was 4AM and since it was loud enough to wake me from my sleep I called the police to come and investigate. At the time I was thinking it was a d...

The Art of Bubble Building in Social Media

Image
Normally this is the time of day I turn off the internet and sit somewhere with little to no distractions and type out word after word on my attempt at a novel. Today, I'm sort of annoyed so unless I get this post typed out really quickly, I'm not going to spend any real time on my novel. Social media . Yeah, that again. I'm still trying to figure out how social media fits into human interaction, as I'm sure some sociologist at a university is doing somewhere as well. I also don't pretend to be a social media guru, sitting at my Twitter client watching two, three or four streams on information come and go by other self-described social media gurus and Twitter bots. I am, however, a student of life. Since I was a kid I've always watched people: I watched how my parents interacted with each other, others a...

The Saga of Melanie Jones

Image
It all started with a (supposedly) 'bot account on Google+ : Melanie Jones . Who, as it turns out, is not a 'bot, but rather a real live girl who claims to be a social media and personal branding expert. Go look at her Profile, she posts only pro-Romney/Tea party posts, which is fine, each and every person on social media has a right to curate their own mini-blog of their own material. Sometimes these posts are overtly pro-Romney and sometimes they're very disparaging towards the current sitting president , Obama; sometimes going so far as to make them racist. But that wasn't enough. What really annoyed the Google+ community is Melanie Jones does not allow commenting on any of her posts by dissenting opinions. Sure, they're all public posts (she wants them to be seen by the entire internet) however she restricts commenting to those people who agree with her or who will reinforce her opinions. That's right, she does not allow dissenting comments or ...
