HDR and Me (or You)

inspired by G+ post https://plus.google.com/u/0/103486150650858067282/posts/WTgoQUUEf4m and article  http://www.outdoorphotographer.com/how-to/shooting/digital-pitfalls-a-cautionary-tale.html + AJ Schroetlin , I agree with most of your points. However, with the advent of the digital age and the relative inexpensive method of digital manipulation we have at our disposal, I think many photographers have taken to compensating their lack of camera skill/knowledge with being adept photoshop users. A crutch. However, I do agree that many photographers took on HDR as a gimmick. They saw how popular HDR processed images were and in order to stay in the game, took on that method for their own work. I can't fault anyone for that as many business that plans to stay relevant has to adapt to current market trends, or find their niche. And , I also agree, HDR does have it's place and that one and only place, in my opinion, is when trying to capture those ranges that camera sensors just ...

Via Gene C ::ahem::, Snapseed update. Originally shared by Jonathan Seyghal When the effect is more noticeable than the photo, you're doing it wrong More people should just let Google+ apply a little Auto-enhance to their pics and not get tempted by the HDR game. Sorry, but unless done well, much of HDR (much like tilt-shift), look crap and I'm seeing lots of crap HDR in my stream today. #hdr   #snapseed   #snapseedhdr   http://urhdrsucks.wordpress.com/

No, I'm Not Required to Reciprocate

Image
UPDATE: Google flagged this post because it has a link to the now defunct Streamzoo photosharing service. Absolutely ridiculous that this should trigger a flag, but here we are in the every-annoying Google's sandbox . - 18JAN2023 It's been a while since I made a post. Sorry. I wish I could say it wasn't my fault, but it was and there's no one to blame but myself. You see, my niece was in town for nearly two weeks and from wake-up until bed-time I remained busy, busy, busy. Also, I spent a lot of time in the mountains and various areas that received little to no internet connection. Huh ?  What? That means it was nearly impossible for me to upload photos or anything else via mobile connection. But let's move on. I was recently perusing Streamzoo on my Note II and noticed a lot of people, especially younger people, claiming they will follow back if you start following them. Great! Reciprocating is fun and respectful, right? Well, maybe. There's no rule that says w...

The Purity of Photography as an Art Medium

Image
I've been playing photographer since the early 90s. First in high school where I learned the ins and outs of the dark room and had my first experience with an SLR camera and then again as an active duty soldier in the Army when I bought an SLR for documenting my travels and experiences. I continued taking pictures and re-acquainted myself with the darkroom while taking the obligatory art credit in college. It was about this time the first digital SLRs were making it to the consumer market and digital darkrooms quickly replaced the need for gallons upon gallons of chemicals, basins and red lights. It also ushered in the age of digital manipulation.  Image added because this is a photography blog after all In the dark room manipulation of the photograph can happen: filters can be applied to result in a specific outcome, burning, dodging, letting the paper swim a little longer to over develop or removing it early to under develop. This, coupled with in-camera techniques, gave the film...

HDR Gone Wrong

Image
HDR Gone Wrong I know a lot of photographers are using HDR these days to add a little more "art" to their photography and while there are plenty of HDR gone right , there's a whole lot of HDR Gone Wrong out there as well. Don't get me wrong, if the HDR is done right, it can be a great way to present a photo -- however I hope HDR is a photog-fad that's heading on it's way out.
