Rant: the G+ Android App

What annoys me was already posted on Google+ but I wanted to park it here, too.

A lot of times I use the App when powering up, or being on, the computer just isn't feasible and while there are some good things about the app, like being able to + a name and Instant Upload (which never seems to work _instantly_ for me), the annoying things are just too annoying to ignore.

My biggest complaint -- a complaint I've sent feedback on about 25 times and that I've told to in one of his own threads (where he did ask) -- is the app is always resetting the Stream back to the beginning or newest post.

So, for example, if I'm reading along and finally find a post I need to spend some more time on, tap it and open the post up, read/comment and then use the [back] button to return to the stream I'm automatically shot back to the newest post, thus losing my place where I was reading it.

This also happens when:
1- launching the app. That is when initially launch the app I start reading whatever post is showing then the Stream "updates" and I'm shot to the most recent post with no indication of where the post I was reading is anymore. It could be 5 posts down or 45 posts down. So, gods forbid it was interesting or there was a link attached I wanted to read for more information.

2- When opening a Youtube video, watch it and use the [back] button to get back to the G+ app and I'm automatically sent to the most recent post.

3- This also applies to any links in posts. Open the link, read and then go back and I'm sent to the most recent post.

4- If I open a post by tapping on it to make it stationary while I open a link or a YT video or just spend time reading it since it's a longer post, and I hit the [back] button to go back to the stream I'm (again) sent back to the newest post.

This is very very annoying for a number of reasons. i've been through the settings and can't find anything that allows me to halt, pause or mark my place in the stream so I have to conclude that the feature just isn't there.

Also, when adding the location to the post, the app never seems to be able to find the place I'm actually visiting. It can find everything within a 3 mile radius, but it can't find where I'm actually physically located. This applies whether GPS is on or off. However, if I search for the place the app can usually find it just fine. Sometimes it can't and I accept that, but never being able to find where I'm physically located? Really?

The other issues I've had were resolved, so no complaints there.

I would like to know why, if Picasaweb allows up to 15 minutes of video to be loaded, we can't load video to Picasaweb from the app or from mobile at all. Youtube is great and all, but every video doesn't need to upload to YT.

Oh well, I guess I'm FB from mobile and G+ from the desktop.

The GOP's War on Women Makes Them More Fundamental Than Ever

Of course, the bill is unconstitutional. The whole point of the new abortion bans is to force the Supreme Court to reverse Roe v. Wade.

While reading the first page of this article, this quote is exactly what I was thinking. Then I got to the second page and the article's logical conclusion and mine are in sync with each other.

This move by the Virginia legislature is a gambit designed to forcing the SCotUS to revisit Roe v. Wade. Since the Robert's court make-up has already proven previous court rulings no longer apply, the conservatives are hoping for another act of revising American law via (surprise, surprise) activist judges -- which they claim to hold in contempt on the campaign trail, but who they are relying on for a win they think are coming decades too late.

Virginia is now going to be on par with Saudi Arabia, Iran and the Taliban when it comes to women's rights. Sic semper tyrannis -- "thus always to tyrants" is Virginia's official state motto and while it might have once been used to refer to freedom from oppression, the modern GOP will have it mean that only tyrants are righteous and right.

UPDATE

And it seems as though Oklahoma doesn't want Viriginia GOPers to get all the wacky credit today since they just decided life starts at conception. Not when the fetus can presumably survive on it's own, but when the sperm enters the egg. And no, there's no safety net for the raped there either.

Apparently, equal protections under the law, the Fourteenth Amendment and the Civil Rights Act mean absolutely nothing to the modern GOP.

I guess this is why some people think it's a dying breed. One can only hope.

By the Water

So, I took a random turn today and found this little area without a lot of people and a surprisingly small amount of garbage everywhere. I say that to point out how much garbage I've been seeing everywhere I've been since I arrived here in Florida. It's almost like the locals just don't care about their community and toss garbage everywhere, even going to far as to dumb garbage in empty lots just to be rid of it. Maybe one day I'll take pictures with garbage in the frame instead of trying hard to get pictures without trash and litter's abundance.

But I digress. Here's a small one minute clip of just sitting my the water and listening to it lap at the rocks on the shoreline.

And here is a small video clip of Rufus actually playing in the water. Well, I guess playing isn't the right word since he actually jumped in there to chase a fish he saw, but this is the deepest I've ever seen him get int the water. I mean, aside from the one time I dropped him in a pool and he sank to the bottom.

Normally he will wade into the water until his belly hits the surface and then he stops. As you can see here his feet actually leave the ground for a whole three or four steps until he returns to land he can touch.

And this is why citizens need to be on patrol with their camera-phones. We can't trust the police to police themselves. That's like trusting congress to give themselves pay cuts. Sgt. Whitcomb says they do have penalties for not having the dash-cams running, but apparently not in this case leads me to wonder, for such a random act, how often are they not running?

Or, and I hate to be the conspiracy theorist, is SPD purposefully losing all those hours of dash-cam that apparently went missing to protect itself from lawsuits and negative PR?

New Employees and Bricks

1. Put 400 bricks in a closed room.

2. Put your new hires in the room and close the door.

3. Leave them alone and come back after 6 hours.

4. Then analyze the situation:

a. If they are counting the bricks, put them in the Accounting Department.

b. If they are recounting them, put them in Auditing.

c. If they have messed up the whole place with the bricks, put them in Engineering.

d. If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, put them in Planning.

e. If they are throwing the bricks at each other, put them in Operations.

f. If they are sleeping, put them in Security.

g. If they have broken the bricks into pieces, put them in Information Technology.

Remember the Time

Drove through my old neighborhood today, the one wherein I spent a majority of my childhood. That was surreal. I haven't been back through there since 1992 as far as I can recall.

I saw my old bus stop for elementary school and the one for JR. and high school. Some houses where friends lived and some houses where we just knew the people.

The first person who ever told me about a BBS, a kid I went to school with lived down the street. I remember a friend of his parents always came over in a '66 Mustang fastback that was sweet.

This girl whom I can't remember why we made fun of her, but she lived a few doors down. It might have been her name which sounded a lot like CITA (see-tah) a catholic charity here. Her's, I can't remember if I ever knew how to spell it, was pronounced the same way. She wore glasses and liked to play with insects.

There was the neighbor's house (on the west side) whom we found out after years of living there was spying on us for the landlord and reporting every time an argument was had, or we didn't mow the lawn in time.

My brother's and mine friends who lived down the street, Raymond and Ryan's house. Their father bought them a little 50cc scooter. I as riding it, hit a pot hole and flipped it. That hurt.

The guy across the street who always yelled if we cut through his yard.

And a myriad of other memories I'd forgotten and remembered.

There was the house that had the standard poodle who would always act like Cujo when we passed their house. I still don't like standard poodles.

This girl who is a year or two older than me, whose brother I played with as a kid, who sent me a Facebook invite. I never hung out with her but I remember she made it about two weeks in Navy boot camp before quitting and returning home. I'd already joined the Army but hadn't left yet for basic.

My friend Phil's father's house -- a house I spent a lot of time in was still sitting there, but it looked smaller and more rundown than I could ever recall. Phil and I are still friends and I know his extremely religious parents split up; his white supremacist father's daughter has two kids by two different black men and his son is on and off drugs. Phil, the high school dropout is married, three children and living the (traditional) American dream in a nice suburban style neighborhood.

I could still show you where my first fight was (can't remember his name), my first kiss (can't remember her name either), where we camped in the back yard and where we watched thunderstorms from the front yard. The house on the corner, the guy had a small dog, a cocker spaniel perhaps, and I would play with it whenever he was outside.

I remember lighting fireworks in the driveway and shooting my bb gun in the back yard. The neighbor had sugarcane growing in their yard and we would go cut it down and chew on it. Another neighbor, of the east side of the house we were in, hated it when we had to go into his yard to get our ball back.

William (Bill) Cruse lived down the street from us, I mean 7 or 8 houses down. We used to fish in the creek that bordered his yard. I remember when his shooting spree started, even though he was a mile away at KMart my mom freaked out and took us to spend the night at her friend's house. I was late for school the next day and had to explain to my teacher why.

So surreal. I mean, I've come back to this town before, numerous times over the years, but I nearly always stay on the main thoroughfares and just have never gone through my old street. Even the many times I've passed within a block or two of it while going to and fro.

The neighborhood did look rundown, though. Not just the house I grew up in, which had apparently been painted, but the whole neighborhood. It looked like the entire neighborhood juts gave up caring. Lawns weren't nice, fences were ratty, mailboxes leaned every which way and people had stuff, just stuff, stacked all around their houses.

But maybe it was like that when I was a kid and I just didn't notice. I remember my mom was a smoker (she quit a few years ago) and she would get out of her car and flick her butts in the yard. It made mowing the lawn a pain in the ass. So, maybe it was a dirtier place than I remember. Our perceptions change as we get older, especially as we learn and change.

The Game and It's Fans

So, I'm perusing Google+ this morning and I see this video posted by Scott Reibolt about an over-zealous fan of the Baltimore Ravens. It is Baltimore, isn't it? I'm going on memory here and that sounds right.

I'm also assuming this is from a recent game. I really don't know since I don't watch football, or any sport for that matter. Why, you might ask? Well, because it never made sense to me. I don't understand why people spend their entire days huddled around a TV hoping someone they don't know does something they can't do. I mean, if Player-A makes a touch-down, how does that affect the world? it doesn't -- it affects Player-A's bank account. How does it affect anything, really? It doesn't, except Player-A might get a new contract or get a better deal if he goes to a new team. But does it change anything important? Is there suddenly world peace? Are terrorists going to drop their plans? Is illegal immigration going to go away? Is the magical-economy fairy going to fix the economy if Team-A wins the bowl game?

No. None of those scenarios will likely come to pass.

Now, how does that affect you personally? Will your job get better? Maybe, if you suckle at the teat of the sports industry, but in all likelihood, it won't get better. Will your kids suddenly respect you? Nope, probably not. Maybe your car/house will magically get fixed. Doubtful.

So, why do people watch other people do things that don't benefit them at all? Is it a chance to live vicariously through the actions of others while safely ensconced in a LazyBoy chair or on the couch? Is it a chance to live, or accomplish something?

It's none of the above, actually.

My father was never much of a father and I remember when growing up, the only time he ever had for my brother and I was during football games when we were expected to watch the game and not really bother him. Did this directly affect my opinion of professional sports? I don't think so. I wasn't interested in them then and I grew up never really understanding why people chose to sit around all day watching a other people play a game.

I remember coming home one time and my dad invited me to watch a game over at his house. I went, if for nothing more than to spend a couple of house with my dad. I was bored silly. I think it was somewhere through the first quarter when I asked him why he watched football so ardently. He replied, "it's something to do."

Okay, great. But aren't there other things to do? You could go out on the boat, go to the beach, go fishing, mow the lawn, etc. His reply was simply that all those things could also get done around the game. So, in essence he had no answer -- if watching football is something to do, and yet there are other more constructive things to get done, then the first answer is without merit.

But he didn't have a better answer. I don't know if he even understood why I was asking. He did, in turn, ask me why I don't watch sports and I told him: I have better things to do with my time than watch someone else do something that doesn't directly affect me. But I do watch TV, don't I?

Of course I do. But I'm usually doing something else at the same time. It might be something as benign as surfing the internet, or it might be something as productive as playing with my dog or cleaning the house, but usually, when I'm watching TV, it's the end of the day and everything that needed to get done got done.

Nine time out of 10, though, the TV is back ground noise for me. I'd probably be just as happy with talk radio or a book on tape as I am with the TV. Am I going to lose it when Ross and Rachel don't get together? Not as all. Am I going to lose sleep when the guys from *Law and Order* don't get their guy? Nope. Am I going to freak out and call all my friends idiots because Leroy Jethro Gibbs got shot again? Probably not.

Anywho, the point of this post was (1) to rant a bit, and (2) to say this:

I posted a comment on the above video:

A perfect example of why I don't get sports fans. They get all upset over watching someone else do something while they sit on the couch, drink beer and get fatter.

How does a game change anything for you? Did it end war? Change a treaty? Stop police brutality? Influence foreign policy? Give you your job? Take your job?

If your life is so unfullfilling that you have to live vicariously through others' achievements, it's time to re-evaluate your life.

One has to wonder why there is so much hate? Did someone piss in their Wheaties, as the saying goes? Oh, nope, maybe their team lost and they don't have anyone else to be angry with. Is that just another reason to ignore sports? My blood pressure doesn't skyrocket until some idiot of a GOPer says something stupid or some moron of a Democrat tries to take away my rights. I've never felt I needed to set a car on fire, start a riot or just plain ol' start a bar fight because of game or a television show. Maybe I have better things to "get emotionally involved with."

Oh, and yes, I have played sports. Still would if it were for a few herniated discs I have. You know, from an accident I had while outside playing sports. I'm cool like that.

This is an internet based argument. Notice Michael Schroeder makes a claim -- I do not disagree with him so much as I claim the officers actually handle themselves in an appropriate manner. Back and forth exchanges before I finally throw in some facts (from Wikipedia) to support my opinion. It's been a while, at least a while as the internet gauges, and no response back from Michael. I wonder if he hates facts that dispute his opinion.

Jason ON - In all fairness, the man did physically attack the officer. We don't know why the first man was being arrested, but the second man comes in and attacks the officer. The officers then subdue and try to get the offender off of their comrade. Violently? Yes. Overbearing use of force? I don't think so. Once the guy let's go of the first cop they put him in cuffs (or bind his hands) and then use pepper-spray to keep others back but considering what just happened the cop is now worried about his safety and justifiably so.

What they do not do is repeatedly physically assault the man after he's been handcuffed. They do not randomly or purposefully over pepper-spray any one individual or the crowds of spectators. They do not pull firearms and make a tense situation worse.

In all, I think these officers acted in a proper manner for their situation.

Michael Schroeder - I'm point out the citizen who attacked the cop. The backstory on this is that they grabbed a random black man who chose not to obey when told to come with them, when they would not provide him with a legal reason to do so.

As I said, we as citizens are obligated to act in the manner of that brave soul who stood up to the fascist.

Where did you get this backstory? Did the police have reason to suspect the original man was involved with something illegal? Was he suspected of drugs? Was he a CI? Did the police get a report of a similarly dressed man in the area having committed a crime?

The police are allowed to stop you for questioning and they really don't need a reason to although it does help if they have one. We don't know why the guy was thrown to the ground and had the two police officers on him.

Michael Schroeder - As for where I got the backstory - I used something called deductive logic. First, I watched the video and saw that they were Baltimore police (based on their insignia and their car) . I then looked at the posting date of the source linked at copblock.org. Then I googled "baltimore police attacked during arrest" and read several different articles, some mainstream some exstream, about the incident, then made a judgement on my own.

But I have to tell you, +Jason ON, you're a sheep and it's people like you that give police an overinflated sense of their place in the world and the obligations of their office.

The police are most certainly not allowed to stop you for questioning, there is a concept in the United States called due process of law.

Secondly, any time the police intend to interact with a citizen for any reason they must provide a valid reason. If their reason is unconstitutional or not valid in some other way, or even if you choose not to do so, unless you are already told you are being put under arrest, then you have no obligation to adhere to their orders or stay in their presence.

"Resisting arrest" is the only charge the original victim here will be facing, be cause there was no other crime committed prior - So the reason they're arresting him is that he was resisting an unlawful arrest, which is well within a citizens' Constitutional rights.

Jason ON - You're wrong. The police need a valid reason under the law to arrest you or detail you and each have different criteria they need to meet. However, just to stop you they don't. The courts have upheld that time and time again. Think of it like a traffic stop: the police should, but don't necessarily, need an excuse to pull you over. They flip on the lights and you pull over. Then and only then do they need to justify it, but not until they've asked for your license, registration and insurance.

Secondly yes you do under the caveat of a 'reasonable amount of time.' Look at my above example: the police can stop and detain you legally for a reasonable amount of time in order to ticket you, check your credentials, etc. all without arresting you.

It's called Constitutional Law, go take a class.

Again, you "used" dedusctive reasoning but you failed to show your sources. If you've already looked and read them finding a couple to share shouldn't be too hard. So I'll withhold my opinion until you've done so.

And no, I am not a sheep. I'm more anti-cop than a lot of people, but in this scenario, from what I've seen, they did nothing wrong.

You should research for yourself the incident, which is very easily found based on the criteria presented already. I say you should research it yourself because in researching it you will find much data and many situations that will be all the more valuable to your experience because you discovered them while researching for yourself.
You won't appreciate, clearly, incidences that are handfed to you.

As for Constitutional Law, I'll give you a very brief class.
The Fourth Amendment of the Constitution guarantees a citizen from illegal search and seizure. This is not the "seizure" that we think of, as in seizing goods, but also of seizure of person.

The Supreme Court of the United States has repeatedly upheld that a citizen does not need to listen to or address police officers unless they are under arrest or being seized. They have also upheld that police have a right to conduct a pat down or frisking, if and only if, several specific conditions are met. In this incident, none of those seemed to have been met, based on the released statements of the police department and witnesses.
Also, the Supreme Court has upheld a citizens right to avoid a "citizen encounter" - that is an interaction with police officers who have not used a show of force or indicated in a way that a reasonable person would believe they are compelled to obey. If it is not a citizen encounter, it is an arrest or seizure.

So, in short, the police had no right to escalate a citizen encounter for which they did not have cause to arrest or even to pat down the suspect into a full arrest and the citizen was fully within his rights to protest and avoid this unlawful seizure of his person. The bystander who assaulted the police was doing nothing more than ensuring the Constitutional rights of his fellow citizen, upon noting that the police officers were directly in violation of such.

And I reiterate, it is the duty of a citizen to act a way that upholds the Constitutional rights of all citizens, especially when those who have sworn to uphold the Constitution are in violation of it.

Like I said, with the facts that were presented we don't know why the police had the first man on the ground and were trying to restrain him. You made a claim that the internet does know what transpired before the video you present but you provided no references to back up your claim and therefore your claim does not stand.

That being said, I stand by my original opinion: the police, given the situation they were in, didn't act in an unreasonable manner.

Dolphin Watching

So, this morning I took Rufus with me to the beach to watch the sunrise. Truth be told, I don't think I'm going to take him again as he was more interested in watching the kitty that was running loose than he was in watching the Sun crest the horizon.

Anywho, after the sunrise we pulled over at the Indian River Lagoon and walked for a while. Once we were under the Melbourne Causeway I noticed the water moving and soon saw a dolphin (or porpoise, I really don't know. But for the sake of this story I'm going to go with "dolphin.")

Since I am like a trained special forces soldier in my reflexes I grabbed my Android and took some video. If you have 5min take a look. If you don't... well, you're not missing much.

That's why I never vote for the same Guy after two terms unless they seek a new higher office. BUT you are wrong in a MAJOR way in suggesting protest and riots like what we see overseas as being the solution. Those people have no other choice because they do not have the same freedoms that we do in America. Americans don't need to protest nor riot, we just need to vote intelligently. A good start is to stop voting for the same career beaurocrat each election. We need to impose a term limit of two. Furthermore, Congress needs to live under the same laws as the rest of its citizens. I could go on, but this not the proper forum for a legnthy discourse.

Please consider voting over protest and rioting. Americans lead the world in freedom and we need to protect those freedoms by exercising personal responsability and intelligent voting. These two items could change and revitalize America.

"Linky Linky" was a term I originally found on a message board I frequented back in the early 00s. It was a playful request to provide a link to the source material that someone was basing their argument or position on during a discussion.

Since then, and college, I always to try to have a link to whatever data or article I am referring to if I can help it. Sometimes I don't, especially if I'm just typing away at the keyboard with no goal in mind. However, when I can I do.

I recently read this article by Thomas Hartman whom I'm connected to on Google+. His article, or blog post, cites a story in the New York Times about the lack of social mobility in the United States due to the top one-percent earners lobbying for laws and policies that keep the rest of us down.

Great. Now, I'd like to read said article. However, Thomas Hartman doesn't link to it anywhere in his post. Which I find very annoying. It's just a personal preference of mine to have the subject presented for discussion actually presented for discussion. And I told him so in my reply to his post:

It's really annoying when someone writes an article or a blog post about an article or a blog post and does not link to said article or blog post. Now I have to go to NYTimes.com and find the article you're referencing.

Does anyone else get annoyed by these sorts of things? Am I being too picky? I don't think so, but then again none of us really think we're being too picky when we're being too picky.

Police Abuse of Power

How about a compilation of of police brutality with Occupy [main]Street protesters.Or this: CCP holders (Conceal Carry Permit) acting in the proper manner by trying to show their credentials to the police officer who stopped them for a traffic infringement are being threatened with by the officer with a bullet to the face. Is that appropriate for law abiding citizens?Or this one, wherein the police officer apparently tasers a man, from behind, who is doing absolutely nothing threatening. It appears as though he tasers him simply because he can. Granted, we don't know what led up to this video, but even if it were a heated conversation the situation appears to be in control at the time of the tasering.

And this one sickens me. I'm around dogs all the time. Heck, Rufus (my dog) has his head resting on my leg right now. That dog is just running out there to greet the officer. When dogs are defensive or scared they bark and growl from a distance, they don't generally run up and attack unless they're trained attack dogs. This dog looks like he's running up to say "hi" to a guest and that's all.

Exploring Florida

For those of you who are paying attention... and by "those of you" I mean the person who accidentally stumbles upon this blog while searching for something interesting on the interwebz... I left Colorado and came to Florida to winter here where I can still walk around barefoot and not have to worry about jackets, sweaters, snow or ice.

Since I'm here, I wanted to explore Florida a little more. Last time I came down was this past summer when I came down for the final shuttle launch. Even though I grew up here we never explored much of what Florida has to offer and I found a really cool place that is barely an hour away from the town I grew up in called Bok Tower and Gardens (and you can see my pictures from that day HERE). My intent when I came down this time was to find more places that I didn't know about, places that were interesting and speak to Florida's culture as a state but that aren't touristy and internationally known attractions.

Do you know how hard it is to find a book of "off the beaten path" places in Florida? Most of the tradtional "travel Florida" style books list the theme parks, the fancy hotels and the 3 star and up restaurants. They don't really list those "other" places -- places like Bok Tower and Gardens.

Doing some research last night on the interwebz, I was able to find this book: Weird Florida where I learned of a giant sinkhole in north-central Florida and an old stone fortification just an hour or so north of where I'm sitting right now called Old Fort Park. I never knew this place existed. Sure, Florida has St. Augustine, but Old Fort? What else is here? What else don't I know about?

I thought about starting another blog just for exploring Florida and I might still, but for right now I'm just going to tag these posts with Florida and explore to separate them from the massive amount of other posts I have under Jasonisms. Ha ha ha ha!

So, if you know anywhere I should know about or something I should see, please let a brutha know. And remember, gas is friggin expensive down here and I'm poor. :D

Toy Run

My motorcycle club went to the annual Children's Hospital Toy Run this year. Normally, everyone would be on a motorcycle, but since the temperatures were in the single digits this morning and the ice and snow hadn't melted from yesterday's snow, being on two wheels was called off by the organizers: Harley-Davidson.

Regardless, we met at Village Inn, had breakfast and then most of us went down to the staging area at Aurora Sports Park to wait for the 11 o'clock roll-out. While were were there I walked around with the camera:

This truck was loaded with toys in red bags.

The Jolly Fat Elf, himself, was strutting around the parked cars and socializing people, shaking hands, giving out hugs and thanking everyone for participating.

He even took a minute to get his picture taken with a couple of girls. How cold does it get in the North Pole, anyway?

This guy let me take his picture while we were gathered in the lobby of Children's Hospital. I just thought his face carried so much of the character of the day.

The Wonder of the 90s -- in no particular order

So, I was watching something VH1 called 40 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 90s or something to that effect. Anywho, I was in my 20s during a vast majority of the 90s and still like the music from that decade. Yes, I'm getting old. Don't get me wrong, there is some good modern music, too, but the 90s saw the end of hair bands and the beginning of grunge, saw the death of the power-ballad (thank the gods) and we saw rap mature a little more. I think we also had a little more variation in tunes than we're hearing today.

Oh, and alternative rock. I love alternative rock. These days they call it just plain old rock.

There are about 20 more songs VH1 went over in their 40 One Hit Wonders of the 90s than I share here, but I wasn't paying too close of attention to the show.

This is just a fun tune that make me want to go to the beach. I don't know what, maybe because they're singing about sunshine, maybe it's because I associate sunshine with the beach -- I don't know. I just know it's fun, catchy and I like hearing this song. Oddly enough, I remember listening to this song (for the first time?) during a fairly intense snow storm.

I think this song came out in my senior year of high school, you know, back when MTV still played music videos and "reality TV" was called the news. Oh, and Andrew Dice Clay: "oh!"

I can't help it, sometimes when I'm riding the motorcycle or just doing repetitive work this song pops into my head and won't leave. Why? Because it's catchy, that's why. They lick me boom, boom, down!

Good song, no doubt about it.

I was in the Army when this song came out, living in Mannheim, GE. We used to go to a country music dance club (yes, really. Because that's where the girls were, duh) and the DJ played this song. Who knew the band was Swedish? I didn't. I thought it was some new sort of acid-country, or something. Anywho, it's still a catchy tune.

Who doesn't like the Humpty Dance? I mean, seriously!

I also remember riding in my friend's 5.0 Mustang a few years later. Who can ride in a 5.0 and not think of this song?

So, I sang this the one and only time I ever karaoke'd.

I watched it for a bit but never really got into the characters. NookColor CM7 - Review

So, I've been using my NookColor CM7 loaded tablet for a few days now. My thoughts on it are this:

I think it's great as a simple cloud and information device. It allows me to easily check my social networks, look at GMaps, peruse my email and a few other things that I do a lot from my Android phone anyway. However, as a production device, it is seriously lacking. It has no microphone for voice commands or input and the screen is not as responsive as I would like. Not to mention typing on it, while easier than on my Android since the buttons are larger, is not easy and I find a lot words are being replaced because Android doesn't recognize them, a la auto-correction on iOS.

And I guess I'm just old school in that I prefer typing with both my hands on a keyboard than typing with my thumbs on a screen which may work well on a smartphone for shirt quick replies, longer replies or created content gets tedious.

I don't ever foresee tablets replacing a computer, but maybe to augment computer usage.

NookColor Root

This seemed to work for me and I wanted to share some non-developer directions for rooting my Nook Color (v1.2) henceforth known as NC.

For the most part I followed these directions: XDA-Developers but there are some parts to the those instructions that I found were confusing or not non-developer friendly.

You should have a PC available and a class 4 or higher microSD card. I used a class 10 8gig card.

First I had to download the files for the root:

ManualNooter (since my NC is running software version 1.2)
Clockwork (depending on your microSD card size, but at least 1gig)
WindowsImageWriter (to write the image file onto the microSD card)

Step 1:
Extract the WindowsIMageWriter using an extraction tool. I used 7-zip, a no-frills file extraction tool that works just fine with rar files. It should create a new folder called "win32diskimager"-xxx with "xxx" being additional information. The point is, if it extracted the rar file then you're doing just fine.

Extract the Clockwork version you downloaded.

Step 2:
Connected a formatted microSD card to your desktop computer. Do not use your phone or the NookColor, itself, as the connector, use instead a full-size SD adapter that can slide into the built-in card reader on your computer (like I did) or an external card reader that can handle the microSD or the full sized SD adapter.

Step 3:
Open the Win32DiskImager by opening the folder and double-clicking the application icon. A new window will open. Click the little file looking icon and search for the Clockwork image you downloaded. Next to the folder icon is a drive letter: click on the drive letter and choose the drive where your microSD card is plugged into your computer. In my case it was drive H, but could easily be another drive, so double check that the default is in fact the correct drive location.

When you are sure everything is A-okay, click WRITE on the bottom of the win32inagewriter's box. The file should write to the drive (hopefully the microSD card). It may take a few minutes to wrote, but shouldn't take more than five.

Once that is complete, drag and drop the un-zipped, or un-extracted, ManualNooter file onto the microSD card as well.

Step 4:
Ensure your NookColor is turned OFF and insert the microSD card (not the adapter) into the microSD card slot of the NC. The slot is located under the metal tab that says "Nook" near the hook-ring on the bottom-left (as you're facing the screen).

Power the NookColor on. You will (hopefully) see "Loading" with a couple of skulls on either side and then a text menu in orange. Using your NookColor's volume keys to navigate and the Nook button (looks like an n) to select:

install zip from SD card, then in the next menu
choose zip from SD card, then in the next menu
choose the ManualNooter file and then press the Nook button, n.

Confirm you actually want to run the update. Apparently, at this point the update will sometimes fail. This is normal. This did not happen for me so I can't be sure how normal it is.

Once the update has finished installing reboot the NookColor by using the menu and selecting the reboot option.

You need to choose the Zeam Launcher when the reboot begins.

At this point your NC should boot using different graphics and you will be prompted to login into GMail. Once you have logged into Gmail you see soft buttons for Android apps, Gmail, GTalk, the browser and Music.

You will also have some new buttons and status bar above the Nook button (n), from left to right: the reader, back and menu.

You are now rooted.

Turn the NookColor OFF.

On your PC, download the ROM you'd like to use, in this case, we're using CyanogenMod-7 and the gapps file as well.

Move both zipped files over to the microSD card.
Install the microSD card back into the NookColor and turn the power on. Remember to confirm each step as necessary.

Using the same skills you already have, navigate to install from SD card and select the CyanogenMod-7 zip and choose to install.

Once that is complete repeat the procedure for the Gapps zip file.

Luckily, all went well for you.

Use the NookColor's power button to go back one menu and go to Mounts and Storage. Choose format /cache (a little more than halfway down), choose that use the n button to select.

Use the power button again to choose Advanced and Wipe Dalvik cache.

Some people seem to be having a problem at this step: their NookColor's are freezing. Mine did as well. I took the microSD card out of the Nook and force-rebooted the Nook by holding the power button until the NookColor powered down. I gave it about a minute and turned it back on.

Upon boot-up I get a CyanogenMod screen, then a lot of forceclose notifications from Android. I turn the NookColor off and head back to the internet for some better directions. At this point I think I've FUBAR'd the native OS (the Nook's operating system) so there's no real going back.

The Google Apps file

There is something about overclocking the CPU but according to the webpage, after Cyanogen build 132 this kernel software will be in the ROM automatically so, as far as I know, there is no need to download and install it separately.

Move those files over to your microSD card just like you have with all other files, thus far. Load the microSD card back into the NookColor and boot.

Follow these directions:

Installing
1. boot with bootable sd (CWR_ext4_0.1 - ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.6)
2. 'mounts and storage' --> format the

/system
/data
/cache

3. back to main menu
4. 'install zip from sdcard' --> 'choose zip from sdcard' --> select "latest_CM7_nightly.zip"
5. 'install zip from sdcard' --> 'choose zip from sdcard' --> select "gapps-gb-20110120-signed.zip"
6. 'install zip from sdcard' --> 'choose zip from sdcard' --> select "update-1100mhz-froyo_CM7-emmc-cwm.zip" [if desired]
7. 'mounts and storage' --> unmount sdcard --> remove sdcard
8. reboot

Still no luck.

Finally, I downloaded (apparently) the newest version of the Clockwork program: 3.2.0.1 and started from scratch. That's right, I formatted the microSD card and wrote the new image file, then copied the ManualNooter over.

I plugged the microSD card into the NookColor and and repeated the same steps as above. This time, however, I did not format the system /system, /data, /cache, nor did I take out the microSD card. Instead of rebooted and everything seemed to load fine.

So, now for the real test:

I powered the NookColor down, took out the MicroSD card and rebooted.

Everything seems to be working fine! (So far!)

Rufus Walk in Snow

Took the camera with me this morning when I took Rufus for a walk. We did a little trail, about 3.5 miles round trip. I took the camera mainly to get pictures of the snow and Rufus playing in the snow and whatever other wintery things I could find to take pictures of today.

These first two are snow on top of a evergreen-style bush. I just wanted to get close-ups of the snow.

Rufus spooked some ducks and they flew off.

And some geese flew overhead.

Fairmount Cemetery Oct 29, 2011

So, this weekend, well, Saturday in particular, some Google+ photographers were supposed to meet at Fairmount Cemetery for some photography. Cool.

Well, not so cool. I showed up on Saturday and waited for the others but no one ever arrived. I checked Google+ only to find out that the meet was for Sunday not Saturday. Oops.

Regardless, Rufus and I walked around and took some pictures. You can see how I got tired of same0old same-old and took some creative editing liberties with some of the pictures.

Also, this is right near Hallowe'en and these are pictures of a cemetery, a very historic cemetery, so I tried to make a lot of the images appear spooky.

Thank the gods for free samples.

A couple of weeks ago I went to a couple of dog events and due to my unerring cuteness I was able to walk away with bags upon bags of free sample sizes of dog food.

Recently, my (current) roommate went and bought dog food. I know she bought the brand I normally buy and have been using for years (Kirkland, repackaged Diamond Dog foods) and whatever it is she wants her dog to eat.

I'm not sure if the new food mix is the cause of Rufus feeling ill today but I did notice that neither one of the dogs, who bother me to feed them about a half hour before they're normally fed, weren't bothering me to be fed.

When I went to put food down for them they both looked at their dishes and then looked at me like I had just told them to come over to me and get a beating. I gave them each a half serving.

Neither dog ate.

I went to my stash of SWAG from the doggie events and pulled out a couple of sample packs, pouring them out for the dogs next to their dishes. Both of them quickly gobbled up the sample foods and both of them walked away from their more traditional dinners.

Since I'm moving this weekend I don't see the point in buying a large bag of something, but I may have to run out and buy a smaller bag to last the next few days. At least for Rufus. My roommate can continue to feed her dog whatever she wants.

For the record Rufus will eat without question): Kirkland (Costco) Chicken, Avoderm, Evo, Natural Balance and Bil Jac?

Ordered this book (from the library, or course). Read the first two and while he's no Harry Dresden, Atticus O'Sullivan is a likable enough Druid. What really makes the books, though, is his relationship with his dog.

Google Maps

Anyone else having problems with Google Maps? Or is it just me? I swear, GMaps is so frustrating to use I just want to chuck my laptop through the window, then pick up the pieces and slam them on the ground over and over again like some primitive ape who can't get an iPad to show pictures of little kittens.

So, I used the MyTracks app on my phone to record a motorcycle ride I went on last weekend. When all was said and done, though, I forgot to restart the recording while we were stopped for lunch.

UFOs are Out There

UFO doesn't necessarily mean an alien intelligence it just means a flying object that is unidentifiable. However, there are some strange things going on all over the world and thanks to modern consumer grade technology we are able to capture more and more weird occurrences and share them for review by the world at large.

I think this is a good thing.

Have you seen anything weird out there? I have. A tiny tiny blip in the sky one day that I followed for about 20 minutes.
